Welcome to the SRLF's general questions and answers section for the online portal. As we do cover quite a bit of info in our FAQ's we've attempted to keep the questions as organized as possible. You may or may not find the answers to your questions. If you do not find an answer to your question, please visit the contact us page, fill in the form and submit your question. We try to keep our FAQ's up to date, and your question may be the next FAQ we add to that list!

Can a spouse of a borrower act as a Surety?
No.
Can both parents act as Surety for the same loan?
No, not if both parents live in the same household.
If I am unemployed will my sureties be asked to pay the loan?
Yes.
What happens if my surety(ies) are older than the required age?
The proposed surety must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and no older than sixty (60) years of age at the time of signing the contract.
What happens if my surety(ies) are unwilling to share their financial information with me?
You will be able to share your code with your surety(ies) where they will be able to upload their information independently.
What happens with my surety’s information?
All documents pertaining to the sureties must also be uploaded.
What is the reason for the surety salary deduction?
All parties to the contract will sign a salary deduction. The salary deduction for the surety will only be activated in cases where the beneficiary becomes delinquent. Both parties will be reminded continuously before this take effect.

Before completing the Surety Form, please review the following steps carefully to understand the process from start to finish.

Step One

Start Online Surety Form

The Surety Form is divided into sections.
Follow instructions in each section until the Form is complete.
You do not have to complete it in one sitting, use the “Save Form for Later” button.
You can start or continue the process and complete it at any time.

Step Two

Requirements for Sureties

Please note that the following items, where applicable must be uploaded online.

Digital Photo of Surety - A photo of 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) on a clear background is required.
Two Valid Government Approved Identification (National ID card, Barbados Passport, or B’dos Drivers’ License)
If employed, Payslip , Job letter must be provided.
Proof of Address (recent bill or document received in the Mail).

Please note the following:

The proposed surety cannot have an existing loan with the SRLF.
The proposed surety must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and no older than sixty (60) years of age at the time of signing the contract.
Loans for $30,000 or less the following shall apply:
- One (1) surety is required.
- For loans less than $20,000 the annual income shall be no less than $20k.
- For Loans of $20,000 up to $30,000 the annual income shall be no less than $30k.
Loans greater than $30,000 up to a maximum of $50,000
- Two (2) sureties are required.
- The combined income of the two sureties shall be no less than $60k. Please note that the annual income of any one of the sureties must be no less than $20k.
The surety or sureties must have been gainfully employed on a continuous basis for a minimum period of a year or on a cumulative basis for at least two years prior to application.
Sureties must be citizens of Barbados, residing and employed in the Island.
Have a credit rating that meets the SRLF credit rating guidelines.
Evidence of income must be provided:
1. For Employed persons - Pay slip and a Job letter.
2. For Self-Employed Persons - Financial Statements and an Affidavit confirming Income & Expenditure of the business from an Attorney-at-law, Justice of Peace, Minister of Religion, or your Personal Accountant.
Proof of Address in the form of a recent utility bill or bank statement.
Provide to the SRLF on the *prescribed form a statement of personal income and expenses and a statement of net worth.
Both parents living in the same household shall not be permitted to act as surety for the said loan.
Spouses of borrowers are not allowed to act as sureties.
Documents may be certified by any Member of Parliament, Magistrate, Justice of the Peace, Minister of Religion, Police Officer (Gazetted Rank), Bank Manager, Medical Practitioner, Attorney-at-Law, School Principal, or Senior Civil Servant who is acquainted with the applicant. Stamp of Office MUST be used on the front of all documents.

Step Three

Submit Form

After submitting the form, you will not be able to make any further changes to the information online.
Ensure that you have checked off all the necessary requirements listed under the “Review Checklist” at the final section.

Step Four

Track Student Application

Use the unique Confirmation Code provided after submitting the form in STEP THREE. You will also be notified via Email and SMS message of each update as the student's application is being processed.
